The Famous Choddy Rig - The Carp Angler

THE FAMOUS CHODDY RIG

If you get to ask any British Carp Angler which rig he will always have in his rig wallet, it will be some version of the Famous Choddy Rig. Purely designed for the use with

Pop-Ups, its sole purpose is to present a pop-up bait on top of bottom chod or debris. A huge advantage of this rig is that it is never really fished over a bed of bait and never fished with a PVA bag.

More fish have been caught in the UK these last 10 years with this presentation than most probably any other rig and definitely one to try out, especially in clear water where the lake bed is covered with silt or chod.

HOW DO WE BUILD IT?

Requirements

ACE RIGAMORTIS 25lb

10cm OF STRIPPED BLACK SILT (10-15LB)

MICRO SWIVEL

RING SWIVEL

BRAID SCISSORS

PULLING TOOL

LIGHTER

Construction

First tie a 15cm length of Rigamortis to any side of the ring swivel. You will notice in the pictures that I illustrated both. First choice will be tying it to the swivel end either with a 3- turn Blood knot or 3 turn Grinner. Then take the other end of the Rigamortis and push it through the eye of the hook as illustrated. Pull the hook close to the swivel end and grip the line and hook by the bend and wind the loose end 8 times around the hook towards the eye. Now push the loose end through the loop created between your thumb and forefinger at the bend of the hook, wet with saliva and pull tight.

Now add a Micro swivel to the tag end and pull the loop small as illustrated.

Cut the tag end as to leave about 5mm before burning it with the lighter and leaving a blob at the end. This blob will prevent the swivel from pulling through and leaves a very neat D-shape.

Finish the rig off by tying another length of Rigamortis to the other end of the ring swivel and an overhand loop knot at the very end. Now take the 10cm length of Black Silt, strip it completely and push one end through the eye of the Micro Swivel and hold both ends while pushing a pop-up onto a baiting needle and pulling it onto both ends of the line. Pull the pop-up tight to the swivel and make a loose overhand knot. Now put a boilie stop into the loop and tighten. Make another one or two overhand knots, cut the tag ends and leave about 5mm to burn with the lighter again.

Add a piece of rig putty to the swivel and there you have the Famous Choddy Rig. There are at least 3 other versions of this rig and I will go through it in articles to come. Practise makes perfect, so get the items listed above and get practicing. This rig is super effective and worth having in your rig wallet for the next session.

001 The tools required.

002 Strip off 10cm of Black Silt.

003 Then take 15cm of Rigamortis and tie to a swivel using a three turn Blood knot or to a ring swivel, again with a Blood knot or 3 turn Grinner.

004 Trim off with scissors and blob end off with a lighter.

005 Then take the other end of the Rigamortis and push it through the eye of the hook. Pull the hook close to the swivel.

006 Wind the loose end 8 times around the hook towards the eye. Now push the loose end through the loop created between your thumb and forefinger at the bend of the hook.

Wet with saliva and pull tight.

007 Now add a Micro swivel to the tag end.

008 Pull the loop small and pass the end back through the eye as illustrated.

009 Cut the tag end as to leave about 5mm before burning it with the lighter and leaving a blob at the end.

010 This blob will prevent the swivel from pulling through and leaves a very neat D-shape.

011 Finish the rig off by tying another length of Rigamortis to the other end of the ring swivel. First tie an overhand knot.

012 Pass the end through the knot and pull tight.

013 Creating an overhand loop knot at the very end.
