With winter here we want to try and fit in a few fishing sessions before it becomes to cold for me to fish.
As the crow flies it landed us at Rock Drift.
It is on the road between Potchefstroom and Vandebijlpark in the direction of Parys.
The morning started quite gray but it could not extinguish my fishing spirit.
We were lucky to get a fairly quiet shore.
Usually Drift Rock's small banks are buzzing with anglers.
It's just me and my love and a father and son who challenges the vaalriver for the day.
The fish at first were very shy and movement in the water was little.
As the morning shadows start to dissappear and the sun shows it’s face between pastel candy floss clouds and I almost plunge into a drowsiness in my chair with the "weir’s" sound in the background (ooo soooo quiet) something truly happens.
My polisman gives two jumps and my reel jumps away with a zooooooooom.
Thereaftermy love lands two fish of his own.
At this time the neighbor's son Monrey calls us to help him scoop his fish. He caught a beautiful 5kg carp.
A menu consisting of the following.
Starter: Pink sweets with white dough on the top corner.
Main Meal: Hint of devil's dung with a pink sweet syrup on the ball.
Dessert: Earth worm dipped in creamy soft pink sweet sauce on the bottom corner
And to seal the deal a good feeding place on the opposite shore.
I came to the conclusion that a rowing boat is a good asset there as the “big ones” feed on the opposite side of the shore.
Hit me with a wet fish. After Monrey’s advice we land 8 fish.
Just before loading our last tackle on the the bakkie and the afternoon gives his last breath in we get called again to help Morney land a hefty 7kg carp.
The small place has two brick anglers huts which are equipped with 4 beds, refrigerator, toilet and shower. Hot plates are rented extra. Enough tent and caravan sites. Power and water available. Ablution block have two toilets, two showers and one bath. There is also outdoor sinks.
If you tire from fishing there are great rocks that can be climbed and hung upon. There are 2 Caves which can be explored and beyond the Jetty there is a half-built restaurant with the most beautiful pool for a persons use.
Out on the Lindequesdrift road there is a shop and petrol pump.
The only downside there is that "snakes" with long fingers now also start sneaking around in the evenings. Yeah. With the "shack" village a stone's throw from Rock Drift you go there for fishing at night at your own risk, so I suggest you bring your perimeter alarms along and take measures to ensure that your things are safe.
